The Apartment is an upcoming indie horror game that has just dropped its first private demo. It’s creepy, the apartment you’re staying in, but moving out isn’t an option here. Sigh! By the looks of it, I’d never even sign up to stay in that place. Nope!

But then… since it’s a virtual one, I might try staying in it!

Developed by Ultima Thule Labs, a solo developer based in Florida, USA, The Apartment is a first-person psychological horror and puzzle game coming to PC via Steam in 2027. The studio has also dropped a new trailer, giving us a look at the rather unsettling little living situation.

So, you move into a new apartment, unpack your stuff, get comfortable and settle into a daily routine. Your neighbour seems perfectly polite at first, greeting you and keeping an eye on things. But he’s actually keeping a bit too much of an eye on things. He watches you through the slot in your door, knows exactly what you’ve ordered and starts asking you to share your deliveries.

The days might be relatively peaceful, but the nights? Your neighbour gets increasingly angry, and a siren goes off. Suddenly, there’s a countdown, and you have an important rule to follow: don’t disappoint your neighbour.

The game takes place in a single location, but the apartment shifts between realistic and surreal states. Its environment, behaviour and rules change from day to day. There are timed puzzles, pattern recognition, code-decoding and items that need to be passed through a pipe.

You can play The Apartment private demo, too

The Apartment has dropped its first private demo, and is currently available by invitation only. You can message the developers for a demo key to try the game on Steam. The demo covers six in-game days, with rules changing every day, and includes three different endings. Not all of those endings are survivable, naturally.

You also get a new roommate, a fish that you can actually talk to through your microphone. It’s a fish that lives in a bowl on the stove and has a human face. You need to feed it with food that’s suitable for humans, not fish, though. Sometimes it’ll give you information, sometimes it’ll tell you the truth, and sometimes it’ll just be a rude fish.

And if you’re looking for a full game to play, check out Sleepytime Village, a Point-and-Click Adventure Inspired by Classics like Monkey Island and Broken Sword.
