Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is responsible for codifying a whole genre (alongside Super Metroid), making it one of gaming's most influential titles. Nearly three decades after its release in 1997, Konami's masterpiece has found its way to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, having originally released on Sony's PlayStation and then Sega's Saturn a year later.
By Symphony of the Night's release, Castlevania was already over a decade old, with numerous preceding titles. When 3D gaming was in its infancy, Symphony of the Night emerged to convincingly argue that 2D games would remain innovative. It came as a major design shake-up for the series, solidifying its gameplay all the way up to this year's Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, and paving the way for modern classics like the Hollow Knight duology.
Fan Project Sees Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Super Nintendo Demo
While a proper Super Nintendo port never materialized (the Nintendo 64 was already out), a fan project from developer Kaffeeware is attempting to bring Symphony of the Night—or half of it, at least—to the 16-bit console. As a Halloween present to those who have been following the project, a demo for the game has been released on itch.io. Kaffeeware has made the demo available in the hopes that players will be able to help debug the game.
This unofficial SNES port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is playable on both emulator and hardware, whether some modified original or a re-release like Analogue's Super Nt+. The port has been in steady development for more than a year, with incremental updates on Kaffeeware's YouTube channel going back to June 2025. When asked whether the full game will be ported, though, Kaffeeware has given a definitive "NO. Definitely not the reverse castle."
For the uninitiated, Symphony of the Night's big gameplay twist comes roughly halfway through, when its setting, Dracula's castle, turns upside-down. Protagonist Alucard must then re-navigate previous areas, remixed and with new enemies to fight. Kaffeeware's SNES port appears to be focusing solely on the first half of Symphony of the Night.
New Castlevania: SotN Port Is Made Without AI
Kaffeeware's Symphony of the Night SNES demo is clearly unfinished, but it's an obvious passion project, and the developer has assured fans that generative AI is not involved in the port's creation. It's a reassuring clarification when a number of classic games are being ported, recompiled, and decompiled using AI.
Since Kaffeeware is building this port "by eye," according to one of their comments in the itch.io thread, it's not a perfect recreation of the original Castlevania: SotN. Kaffeeware wants to "keep native SNES specs," meaning some concessions have to be made. Fewer zombies can appear on-screen at once, for instance, so the developer has opted to alter their behavior slightly to compensate.
This may ruffle some Symphony of the Night purist feathers, but the game was designed specifically for the PlayStation first, and likely cannot be perfectly recreated on the different hardware of the SNES. Any die-hard fans that want to make their opinions heard have been invited by Kaffeeware to play the demo and provide their feedback in the itch.io and YouTube comments. It won't be exactly like the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night that released 29 years ago, but it's a fascinating demo nonetheless.
