From Pistol Shrimp Games, an independent studio founded by Toys for Bob veterans, just released Free Stars: Children of Infinity Combat Demo, a free playable ship-to-ship combat demo for the upcoming title Free Stars: Children of Infinity

It's the direct sequel to the award-winning science-fiction action-adventure game Free Stars: The Ur-Quan Masters (based on Star Control II). The demo is available now for Linux, macOS and Windows on Steam and GOG.

From the press release:

"The demo supports local play against a friend on the same device, or online multiplayer matches, and even features LAN play with no Internet connection required. Or go solo and practice against a CPU opponent. Keyboard and controllers are supported (controller required for local human-vs-human play.)

This is the beloved Super Melee experience from The Ur-Quan Masters, reimagined and remade after 30 years. All the classic ships are back (except the Slylandro Probe)—from lumbering villains like the Kohr-Ah Marauder and Ur-Quan Dreadnought to plucky allies like the Mmrnmhrm X-Form and the Spathi Eluder. And they’re joined by new aliens from the upcoming story of Free Stars: Children of Infinity."

More about it: In Free Stars: Children of Infinity, you'll take on the role of the captain who previously saved the galaxy from enslavement and destruction by the Ur-Quan Hierarchy. In that role, you'll load up your starmaps and explore a massive living universe with hundreds of star systems and thousands of planets.

As you navigate these many worlds, you'll meet alien species whom you can befriend (or offend with your human ignorance!). By going planet-side, you can collect resources and make new discoveries that will reveal more of the story while also improving your starships and fleets. Don't want to go alone? You don't have to - Free Stars: Children of Infinity will support online cooperative play among friends, plus competitive PvP Super Melee matches available in the demo.
